Kang Cing Wie

Have you ever seen “Barong Landung”?

Barong Landung is a pair giant human puppet almost three meters high, one figure is a man in black face, and the other is a beautiful princess in white face. Balinese Hinduism believes that the Barong Landung is the replica of king Jaya Pangus and his wife Kang Cing Wie from China.

This year, the Chinese New Year was on February 10, 2013, also coincided with the Balinese new moon Bali, Tilem Kaulu. As part of the celebration of this Chinese New Year, we performed dance in the story about Chinese and Balinese culture acculturation, in Nusa Dua, Bali.

This performance was also a program of classical Balinese art conservation by Sekaa Gong Semara Pegulingan Dharma Purwa Jati Teges Kanginan, Peliatan, under the leadership of Douglas Myers. In this program Douglas Myers collaborated with maestro I Made Djimat, a director and a dancer, to create a dance “The Story of Barong Landung.” In this performance m (mayumi inouye) danced as Kang Cing Wie.

The Story of Barong Landung,” tells the story of King Sri Jaya Pangus with queen Kang Cing Wie, who came from the land of China. After a long marriage they still have no child. After permitted by Kang Cing Wie, King Jaya Pangus decided to do meditation to Mount Batur. On his way he met a very beautiful princess, Dewi Danu. King Jaya Pangus lied to Dewi Danu, and said that he was unmarried. Finally they got marriage, and a son was born, named Mayadenawa. For a long time Jaya Pangus not back home, then Kang Ching Wie followed and searched him to Mount Batur. After arrived, Kang Cing Wie saw Jaya Pangus was with a new wife and a son. Dewi Danu was also shocked and became aware of her husband’s apparently been lying. Dewi Danu reported this to her mother, Betari Danu. In anger, with her magic power she burned Jaya Pangus and his wife Kang Cing Wie. The Kingdom was grieving over the death of their king and queen, so as a form of devotion and love for the king and queen, the people made a replica statue of Jaya Pangus and Kang Cing Wie (known as Barong Landung) and worship.

There were several roles in this performance: Jaya Pangus, Kang Cing Wie, Dewi Danu, Betari Batur, and two dancers who danced the Barong Landung – one was as Jero Gede, and one as Jero Luh.

Being Kang Ching Wie was a new role for m . Dancing with this role needs to combines elements of Bali and China – choreography, costumes and makeup. Grateful! By all artists “The Story of Barong Landung” can be performed smoothly.
